When people ask me about my art, I jokingly tell them I am a “phase girlie.” I don’t know where this combination of words has come from and I think it might actually be the only place girlie graces my vocabulary, but for some reason the cheeky pairing has stuck. I am a phase girlie.
I am also an artist, first and foremost. An illustrator, graphic designer, and animator. A secret songwriter and banjo player, a chaotic chef, a slow runner and fast skier, and a game designer. I am a lot of things - like we all are. And these titles and passions and interests ebb and flow in phases.
An affliction I have is that when a new phase hits me, I desire it to become my personhood. “I am potter now!” I proclaim after my first 3 week pottery classes - and in my mind I imagine a lifetime of building a pottery business, selling my ceramic wares at the market, having a backyard pottery shed, and completely changing my identity.
This space is a place to explore my phases - to document the things that are exciting and creatively fueling me in the moment. It’s also a place release my need to change all of the time, and to remind myself that we can be so many things at once. That all of these phases are my identity, whether or not I change. Here, I hope to share all sides of myself, and to explore what it means to be a creative person in the fullest sense.
Not just an illustrator/animator/amateur potter - an everything.
My name is Kika MacFarlane, I’m an illustrator and multi-faceted creative based in Sun Valley, Idaho. I co-run the creative studio Two Toes with my best friend Tala Schlossberg, where we put on creative retreats for makers of any kinds around the world. I make a lot of art that I share on my instagram, I build indie video games, and I write songs that I do not share (yet). I am married to a kind and musical man, Andrew McKean. We fill our days with lots of rabbit hole projects, time spent in the mountains, and making music together.
Thanks for being here. I can’t wait to play together.
love, Kika
Yes! Humans do not belong in boxes - I too have loads of interests I flit between (and I definitely also do the imagining the future of becoming a successful X after doing it once!)
Love this <3
